Should I feel bad for not tipping my Sonic girl?

Because, after all, they are getting paid by Sonic.
And their only job is to pick up the tray and take it to you.
It's not like they made the food.
And sometimes they only walk maybe ten or twenty feet to your car.

And
also, I never have change on me. I don't like to carry paper money,
which is why I go to Sonic in the first place. Because they have that
nifty little credit card slot thingy.

And I can tell the Sonic
carhops who act like, oh, I'm not getting a tip? They hand you your
drink and food bag and then hesitate. Like, waiting for the tip to
magically appear. And their "Good-bye" to you sounds a little
heartbroken.

Do you tip your janitor for taking out the trash beneath your desk?

Do you tip your Sonic girl?

Grind that...and let me know!

    1. Yes. Shame. Sonic car hops make less than half of min wage. They take your order, make your drinks, put your food in a bag, and any ice cream products are made by car hops. They do more than u think. No u don't pay the janitor to take your trash out cuz a janitor makes twice what a car hop makes. Servers are people too sir

    2. Actually car hop get paid 7.25 and cooks get paid 8.50 and cooks never get tips and car hops can make 10-60$ in tips

    3. that depends what sonic you work and what state. I get paid by sonic 3 dollars an hour. They expect me to make the difference of 4 dollars an hour to balance out minimum wage. Don't lie to people and tell them we make minimum wage. why would I have less than 100 dollars on my card every month if I did? We make our money off tips. that's how we make money.

    4. I am a current employee at sonic and I wanted to thank all the people who tip and encourage others to do the same. Try skating for five to seven hours before you jump to conclusions on how hard our job is. Even if it is the change its appreciated and better than nothing. I think it is disrespectful for a person to stand there expecting a tip. Instead ask your customers a familiar question at the end of your order. For example something like , "is that all I can do for you sir?" This way you know if they're going to tip you without the awkward wait. The last thing you want to do is stand there expecting a payout from a customer. You should always give there change back. Trust me they do notice. Some wait on the change to be given before they give you the real tip.

  2. Why not tip them? Do you know if they are making minimum wage per hour or waiters wages? Tips may be part of their hourly compensation. If you don't want to tip them then go to McDonalds or get out of your car and go wait at the door for them to bring your food to the door and hand it to you. I mean come on what is and extra $0.50 here or there? If you can't afford that then you should not be eating out.

    2. Amen and to the guy that says that Carhops basically dont deserve a tip. Here's a Tip for him , dont come to Sonic to eat if you dont want to tip , you obviously have never , been a Waiter or a Server that only makes a few dollars an hr because thats what your Company decides to pay you , either their thinking the Customer is going to tip you for your Service or Your gonna be Perfectly fine with your measily little 4.25 an hr at sonic , thats if every Customer thinks like you do ahole !!

  3. Tip 'em, cheapskate. Their hourly wage is based on the fact that they also receive tips - that's the way it works. Grow up.

  4. They are paid $7 an hour. More if they skate. Here lately, the service is not as personable as it used to be so I do not find myself tipping as much. Especially when they have the most expensive fast food on the block!

    2. They switched all car hops to waitress wages and make you claim your tips. People don't realize how physically demanding the job is and that the franchise I worked for required you to run so orders would get out quicker. I wear a Nike fuel band to work and I average 5500 fuel points a day from working and I take around 12000 steps working a full shift. Customers dont realize they could be the 250th order that you've taken out that day. You should tip a car hop for hustling to get your order out and doing so with a smile. 20% isn't expected but 50 cents here and there is appreciated. I have horrible knees from car hopping and running around on cement

    3. You start off at 5$ a hour for car hops and if you are good and not a stub then you get a raise too 7.25 a hour if you look it up the average car hop pay is 7.25 google that shit

    4. Actual the car hop minimum wage is 2-3 dollars an hour maybe 4 dollars an hour google it correctly because i have they are servers expected to get tips they get paid like servers.

    5. well the whole "Google that shit" is bullshit. I was livid when I looked on Google and it says we make 6.41 an hour. ask any car hop and they will prove you wrong. I AM ONE! we get 3.50 at our sonic and we are expected to make up the minimum wage in tips. that's our pay. Google is bullshit for the many car hops proving your ass wrong buddy. ask a car hop next time. not fucking google. dumbass.and you all who complain about the food.. most of the time CAR HOPS DON'T MAKE THE FOOD. THE COOKS DO!!!! We bag your food, make your drinks (tea, water, coffe, slush, ice cream, etc.) and guess what? we have our own jobs inside the store as well. most of the time there is 1 car hop per shift so don't expect that I can hop 30 freaking orders all at once.Don't expect that I Fucked up your food. instead of blaming your car hops for every little thing, talk to a manager and tell the cooks to do better. so while I'm having to hop 20 orders I am cleaning, stocking, making drinks and ice cream, making bags, drink carriers, cutting limes and lemons, mixing strawberries to go in the drinks, portioning candy, etc. No wonder your car hops are frantic and tired and agitated. for goodness sakes, most people don't get a break in their shift because we only have one car hop. we try to smile and male the customer welcome but then you complain we are too slow. then on the other hand you complain we aren't being "happy enough" clearly those who haven't been a car hop will never understand the fact that the job we do is pure hell. yet I am still nice to peoplw. I've never once been rude to a customer or argued. realize the patience and tolerance that takes when you get paid 3 bucks an hour...

  9. I always tip the Sonic delivery person (sometimes it's a guy) at least $1. When I don't have cash money on me, but I have a debit or credit card, I don't go to Sonic, even though I can quick pay on the menu board using a card. The reason is that I won't have tip money to pay the server, who deserves an incentive to keep working at a min. wage job. I have written to Sonic headquarters, asking them to modify the choices when I use my plastic to pay for Sonic where I can select to add a tip for my server & then put in the amount. Never got an answer back from headquarters. I also tip Market Basket bag boys (my younger brother was a bag boy for Market Basket years ago, and those tips really added up and were important to him). H-E-B baggers are not allowed to take tips. What a shame! Hope they're paid well.

  11. I don't know any carhops who make $7/hour here (Texas) unless they are also managers. I work at Sonic and the carhops make minimum wage, between 4 and 5.85 an hour. And I know at a lot of the corporate stores, they make actual waitress wages, 2.13 an hour. I don't get mad at people for not tipping; it is just something nice that we appreciate. I for one probably couldn't afford my rent, food etc without tips. They are my main source of income, and we even have to claim them as taxable income. And many of us do more than hand you your food. At my store, we do checkbacks and come get your trash afterward.
Also, one of my customers called corporate to tell them they should have a way to tip on credit cards and their response was "we don't want tipping to be implied."

    ReplyDelete
  12. And to add to that, a lot of times I do help make the food or beverages when the person making them needs help.

  13. When I first saw the question I was pissed. Anybody that has to rationalize that much already knows the answer. Quit looking for a loophole you cheap bastard.

But...tipping as an incentive so that mininum wage employee keeps their job. Wow. Tipping is based on service and the incentive is to continue to give good service. In fact the quality of service you get might have more to do with the person who sat in the booth before you than the person waiting on you.

If Sonic or any business in the service industry is paying their employees less than mininum wage, tipping is implied. Sonic's scheme ensures payment before the food is even made. How can you base your tip on service not yet received.

  14. ok...we dont make minimum wage. in tennessee we make 5 dollars an hour. we also get taxed on our tips. at my sonic, which is not in a big town, usually there are two girls inside and we do alot. we dont just take out your order. we take your order, make your drinks/ice cream, bag your food, take it out, check back on you, sweep the lots you park on, and do ALOT of cleaning inside. i know people that get paid $10 a hour just sitting on their but. i would LOVE to have a job like that. i depend on tips to buy my gas and daily expences and my check to pay my bills. so tip, please.

    1. In other words, you have a job to do. Sonic is fast food. I don't tip at Burger King because the workers sweep the floor and clean toilets. Can't find one of those at many Sonics! I just go to DQ, Burger King, or Carl's Jr/Hardee's for a burger. Sonic sucks, and they are the ones to blame for their lame excuse at not paying their workers.

  15. ok. first. i work at sonic. i get paid 4.25/hr. and we do NOT get paid more if we skate, i have so many people ask me that and it is NOT true! i depend on tips to live. and second, we do NOT only pick up the food and bring it to you, which by thw way is usually in really hot or really cold weather. we are also required to take your order on the speaker, make the drinks and the ice cream, bag your food the correct "sonic" way, keep the bathrooms clean, keep the lot clean, every 6 min. we are required to take the "smile tray" out to every car (some sonics do every 20), we have to keep everything stocked, make bags (which includes putting specific amounts of mints, napkins, and a salt packets into each and every bag cdepending on its size.), wash dishes twice per shift, keep the menu boards clean, and the list gos on and on. CARHOPS DO ALL OF THIS! and some skate, and if not should be running. everyone thinks that other people are hired to do the other things and they are not, we do SO much. practically everything but cook, which by the way I have been known to have to go and help with. all of this and we still put a smile on our face and bring your food as quickly as the cooks have made it. personally at the sonic i work at if we are just standing around we get sent home. there is always something that we have to be doing. not to mentio the fact that customer service is a hard area to work in. we have to be on our very best behavior at all times, no matter what kind of mood YOUR in.

anyway, i needed to say that. i work extremelly hard and i go to college and i must say that i like my job. but its hard sometimes when tips aren't good when i have done everything possible to make your experience a great one.

For the record, it depends on the Sonic how much people make. The one I work at pays the full 8 and hour, but no more for skaters and it is owned locally. We do have to claim tips to the IRS and pay them back every year and if we don't make enough tips but our end of day total is a lot, then it is unbelievable and we may have to pay into it due to unrealistic money proportions.

    2. I'm so glad you learned to cuss - makes me want to respect your opinion so much.

On the other hand, I worked as a cook in Sonic before and know what it can be like. Sometimes the carhops might have been doing more than their fair share, sometimes not. I also drove for Dominos before. You can't expect to get tipped good every single time. Some of it's based on service they got, which you are usually only a part of. Some of it can be chalked up to just luck. I do think that customers should tip people in those server types of positions, when they can, especially if the server-type person did their part at least fairly decently.

    they deserve a tip.

  19. You should definitely tip! I would first like to clarify that we do not make minimum wage... I, personally, make $3.50/hr and heavily rely on my tips! I'm a recent college graduate and working there until I find a more professional job pertaining to what I went to school for. Imagine trying to pay rent, school loans, insurance, light bills and other living expenses on $3.50/hr...And although it may seem like all we do is just deliver your food to your window it goes way beyond that!
1.) There are many instances where I take your order, make your drinks, bag your food, and then deliver it to you...depending on how busy we are!
2.) There are many days where it is well over 100 degrees outside and we are running from car to car and barely get a chance to get a sip of water because yes we are working on tips and if the food isn't delivered fast enough customers get irritated and don't tip.
3.) At the Sonic I work at carhops are required to to lot sweeps every 15 mins, take care of the garbages, and bring out the "smile tray" every 15 mins, and prepare the bags for your food.
4.) If you are nice/extremely rude we are more likely to remember you!(not just how much you tip)
5.) As "fast food" employees, customers are constantly treating us as though we are beneath them. But if you think about it, we always (with a few exceptions) can give you the correct amount of change with no computer telling us the total.
6.) Personally, I love when customers try to confuse me by giving me a random amount of money thinking I won't be able to correctly give them their change (I graduated with a Bachelor's in Finance...nice try)
7.) I believe everyone should work in retail or in the food industry atleast once. I've worked both and it is definitely rough!
8.) Do NOT intentionally give me 2 pennies and expect that to be my tip. Not to sound ungrateful, but that is very ugly!
9.) Get off of your cell phone for three seconds, not only at Sonic, but anywhere you are trying to receive service! (Imagine trying to help someone when they are on the phone talking about their gyno appt...yes, that has happened to me more than once AWKWARD!)
10.) Most of Sonic employees really do enjoy working there! I would like to apologize if you have ever received bad service. I know this is not an excuse but we all have our bad days. And please don't let one bad experience keep you from tipping the next time!

However, I do agree that if you received bad service or your carhop was rude I don't blame you for not tipping. And no you do not have to tip, but they are greatly appreciated! We also get taxed on our tips.

And if you tip your waiter at a restaurant then why wouldn't you tip your carhop...a waiter is just doing his/her job as well. Right? And if you need anything all you have to do is hit that red button and it will appear...by a carhop. And the same as at a restaurant please don't take it out on the carhop/waiter if your order is wrong
(I didn't know the person who made your burger put onions on it, I do apologize though)

I also want to apologize if any part of this felt like a rant, but if you are a fellow carhop you know what I'm talking about!

    1. So, if a Burger King employee brings your food out to your seat in the lobby, they deserve a tip? Sonic sucks for pushing fast food tips on to the customer. If there's a cheap ass, it's sonic.

    2. you are never going to make just $3.50 an hour. Sonic and all restuarants are required to meet up to minimum wage, whether you make $1 or $3 on top of your $3.50, they still have to make it amount to min. wage. whiner.

      Delete
    3. Funny you say that, because if you don't meet the minimum wage requirements when counting your tips, the managers get mad. And if it is a reoccurring situation for you. Then sometimes you can face consequences, such as written warnings, write up, and maybe in extreme cases, termination.

  23. I think the problem is that it is not generally known that sonic car hops are not paid like people at other fast-food joints. I usually tip my change but did not today due to the chaos that bringing four children to an ice cream joint can produce. Later I thought about it & decided to google the question because I never really knew. I believe that the sonic franchise has found a dirty way to cut their labor cost while also reaping the profits by charging way to much for their junk food. Yeah, there are some people who don't give a crap what they tip but I think the general public is unaware unless you have worked there or know somebody who has worked there. Hurrah for corporate America!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Of course you should tip!! Its NOT like mcdonalds, okay? Its not like we just make your drinks, bag your food, hand it to you, and that's it. Customers have me running things out to them all the time. Sometimes I have to make multiple trips to get them extra sauce, or to accommodate them in other ways, just like a server does. No, we won't top off your drinks, but we don't get to work in the best weather conditions either. I've had people park across the lot when its raining so that I have to walk through the rain to get to them. I've delivered in pouring rain, hailstorms, freezing cold, and blazing heat. All on skates. Always with a good attitude. And people still say its not enough. What does it take to earn your dollar?

  25. I worked at Sonic once. I've done everything there. I had to because I was going to high school, and then after high school it was my second job. That is, until I got my foot in the door being an automotive technician for 6 years running. I don't tip, and let me tell you why. It is the employee's decision to work at Sonic, where it is the customer's decision to tip. It is a risky undertaking. You have to be an attractive young girl to be a successful carhop most of the time, period. Lucky for them there is plenty of suckers out there willing to tip. The beauty behind it is I don't have to. Sonic is a lowly, fast food type job. These people put themselves in that position. You're not actually tipping for service. You're tipping because you feel bad for them. Whether they deserved it or not, its all relative. If they wanted a job based on tips they should have applied at a restaurant.

  26. You sonic people who say you make $3 an hour are big fat liars. For the past three years, the minimum wage for TIPPED employees has been above $4 an hour. If you were paid anything less than non tipped minimum wage, your employer is required, by law, to make tipping readily available on any non-cash transaction. The fact that sonic does not provide this means that you are getting paid at least minimum wage for non tipped employees (somewhere around 7.38/hour). Quit your sob stories about making $3/hour and stop lying and maybe someone would tip you, you whiney brats. Tipping is about providing good service, not paying someone else's bills.

  35. It is federal law that if a business pays tipped employees less than minimum wage, and that employee does not earn enough tips to make up the difference, the employer, BY LAW, must make up the difference. So all Sonic employees should be making minimum wage at the very least, regardless of tips. If they aren't, they need to turn their boss into their local labor board. That being said, I would be happy to tip my Sonic carhop, but I never pay cash. I would think that if the business expects the carhops to rely on tips that they would put a tipping mechanism in the CC machine. As someone said above, Sonic doesn't want tipping to be implied.....well, if that is the case, they shouldn't allow their franchisees to pay below minimum wage and allow tipping to be a bonus, not their wage base.

  36. I always tip between 50 cents and $1. Sonic is the only place close to us worth going to. I have the same carhop nearly every time I visit. She isn't always having a stellar day but she is always working her butt off. I may not always get a smile or of her, but I tip anyway because it's the right thing to do. When I can't afford it, I don't go. I'll always include a tip when I go there. I also plan on giving her my own little thank you Christmas bonus in the form of a card and $20 or more. Just because she does work hard. I hope more people will do things like that. Heck, I might just do that today, just because.

  37. As A Sonic Car hop, I answer speakers, bag orders, make drinks, cook, answer phones, clean outside and inside, and make WAY less than minimum wage... I don't just pick up a tray and bring you food. Even as a manager now, when car hopping I still make WAY less than minimum wage. I depend on those tips here and there to pay bills, eat, and put gas in my truck so i can get to work. Before you think you know what all someone does, you should do your research. Yes some Sonics fail miserably at customer service, and aren't required to do more than one position. But I guess that's why my Sonic is one of the top ten in the Houston area, and ranks highly out of all the Sonics in Texas, and others don't.

However, most managers pull the whole "if you don't make your tips, your not doing your job and we will let you go" so you selfish assholes need to tip.

  40. I am a sonic carhop. And just to clear things up, we do MUCH more than just walk your food to your car. At some point during every shift, I end up doing everything there is to do. Your post is quite infuriating and ignorant. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. But, that is not what makes me upset. What makes me so angry is that i work with girls who are trying to make enough to feed their kids, pay basic bills, etc. They are scrapping by and without the generous and caring people who tip, unlike you, they wouldn't make it. So thank you sir, for being the most ignorant and rude person I have yet to encounter on this issue. Oh and please, don't come to my sonic.

  41. Okay, I heard a while back that car-hops were not earning minimum wage. I used to work at Sonic in 2006 and back then they were making minimum wage. I think it is total BS that the car-hops don't even make minimum wage, it's not like they have to wait on your table, refill your drinks, ask if you need any thing else besides what you order initially but regardless of this, I ALWAYS tip when I go to Sonic. I know what it is like working there and the tips always helped put gas in my car. My point is, if you can't afford an extra .50 or $1 to tip your car-hop, don't eat an Sonic.

  42. I've worked at sonic for a year as a Carhop.

Rest assured, I do much more than take a tray to a car. I make drinks and shakes, takes orders, and- get this- sometimes even cook.

    I get paid $3.50.

When I take you your order, it is likely that I have been on skates for a good seven hours. Every day.

But if a dollar to tip means that much to you, more power to you.

  43. As a former carhop, I can assure you they are no different than waitresses at a restaurant. They take your order, give it to someone else to cook(unless, like me, your carhop is trained to do that as well) and then bring it to you. If you stick around afterwards, they're supposed to check up on you occasionally as well. Not to mention they make drinks, prepare ice cream, bag orders, refill ice, clean outside and in, answer the phones, and lets face it, put up with ignorant people's shit all day. Tipping is a way of saying thank you to those providing you a service. Instead of making your own food or drinks, they did it for you.

  44. There's a problem with many of the posts by Sonic employees. If I order food from Sonic, I am paying the company for my meal. I am explicitly engaging in a transaction with Sonic. You, as a carhop, work for Sonic. You have explicitly engaged in a contract with Sonic that states that you will work for them at a set price. You made that decision. I did not. The guy in the next car did not. The family in the minivan did not. You work for Sonic. Are you working extra duties in the kitchen because a customer told you to or because your employer did? You do not work for me. You are a Sonic employee and as such deserve to be paid a fair wage by Sonic. If they will not pay you a fair wage, look for employment elsewhere.

  45. guys. as a carhop, we get paid $3-8 an hour. at my sonic, it's $5.15. if you say we should find another job if we want to be paid better, stop. I had been looking for a job for 6 months before sonic. the reason most of us work at sonic is because it is the job we get. we work our asses off in ther for below minimum wage. it is not OUR fault that our wage is what it is. we are not selfish for trying to educate people on tipping. we do more than just carry your food. today, I worked a shift with one carhop, a person in drive thru, and our asst. manager as cook. I'm not fully trained to carhop, so I was mostly doing inside. when you order, I take your order. if it's busy, I'm rushing for speaker to speaker to get to you. after that, I have to try to make all those drinks, slushes, and ice creams. when the carhop is in she helps, but she has to balance that with taking the stuff out. and when I'm not there, the car hops are doing all of that. we make the bags with every thing in them. we bag the food, stock everything, clean everything outside and inside, take out the courtesy tray even if it's way too busy. yes, other fast foods do the same. but they make MINIMUM WAGE. CARHOP DONT. it sucks and I agree they should be paid minimum. but I dono get to choose my pay and I can't choose my job. if you are able, please tip us. we're doing all we can for you, I promise. we are never allowed to stand around and talk. we are doing everything we can for you. please help us out if you are able.

  46. People really irritate me we only make between 4-5 dollars an hour at most, even crew leaders don't make minimum wage! We do a lot more than anyone knows, and if you don't wanna believe me ask a carhop the next time you go 11/10 times they will do more than waiters will!
